Friends at Mahjong is a browser table for American Mah Jongg — the Mah Jongg game played across the United States.

Who runs it

The site is run by Phatlinks.com L.L.C. (“Phatlinks”), an engineering company in Sarasota, Florida that has been building software and infrastructure since 1991. Mahjong Lexington is a brand Phatlinks trades under; it is not a separate company. Anything you buy here is bought from Phatlinks.

What it is for

Most people who play American Mah Jongg learned it from somebody at a table. That is a wonderful way to learn and a hard way to practice, because it needs three other people and an evening. This site is the practice: a real table with the real card, that you can open for ten minutes on a phone. Being taught is the other half of it and not the half this site does — the lessons are at Mahjong Academy.

Your first game is free without an account, and four more are free when you make one. After that a membership keeps the table open. The shop sells the tiles, mats and racks the table is dressed with — bought once, and yours on every table you play, here and at Mahjong Lexington.

What we do not do

There are no ads in Friends at Mahjong, for anyone, and we do not sell anything about you. We do advertise the site on Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, and the website carries Microsoft’s advertising tag so that we can count how many of the people those ads bring go on to make an account. On the website, Google Analytics and a visit counter we run ourselves count visits; the iPhone app has no third-party analytics. The privacy policy says exactly what is stored, why, and who else sees it, written against what the software actually does rather than adapted from somebody else’s.

Cards to Play

We are set up so you can use our card or yours. For example, the National Mah Jongg League sets the hands each year and publishes a new card. If you purchase a card from them and have it on you, you can use it to play here. We are not affiliated with the League, we do not sell the card, and you do not need an account with them to play here.
