Play Online American Mah Jongg

You can play online American Mah Jongg right now in your browser at Friends at Mahjong — your first game requires no account, no subscription, and no credit card.

That's the short answer. Here's what it actually looks like once you start.

Your First Game Is Free, No Account Needed

Friends at Mahjong gives you one free game without creating an account — no sign-up or payment method required. If you want to keep playing after that, creating an account unlocks four more free games, for five free games total, and none of them expire. An account is required to continue past the first game, not to begin it.

Single Player: Practice Against Computer Opponents

If you don't have three other people ready to play, Single Player puts you at a table against three computer-controlled opponents. It's a way to keep your game sharp — or learn the flow of a hand — without having to organize a full group first. Free games are a single hand, about a quarter of an hour; members can play longer four-, eight- and sixteen-hand games.

There's also Quick Practice, a faster environment for players who want reps without committing to a full multiplayer session.

Which Card Are You Playing From?

Friends at Mahjong's own card currently lists 51 hands. If you already have the 2026 National Mah Jongg League card in front of you (57 hands), you're welcome to play using that card as your personal reference — Friends at Mahjong doesn't need to reproduce it for you to use it.

To be clear: Friends at Mahjong is an independent teaching and gaming resource and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Mah Jongg League. It doesn't sell the League's card, and you don't need a League account to play here.

Playing With Friends, Not Just Against the Computer

Beyond solo play, Friends at Mahjong supports private online tables so you can play remotely with people you actually know. Depending on your membership level, that can include joining a private table, hosting one, inviting friends by link, and chatting or talking while you play. Membership options and what each tier unlocks are listed on the membership page.

Learning as You Go

If you're newer to American Mah Jongg, Friends at Mahjong includes how-to chapters covering the tiles, reading the card, the Charleston, calling tiles, joker rules, and scoring, plus a guided onboarding tour that walks you through the interface. For a more structured course, Friends at Mahjong points learners to Mahjong Academy — the FAM experience itself is built around practicing and playing.

Starting Today

There's no account required to start: open the game, play your first hand, and decide from there whether you want to create an account for four more free games or explore single-player and multiplayer further.
