American Mah Jongg Practice Online, Free: Getting Started Without a Group
You can practice American Mah Jongg online for free at Friends at Mahjong — one game without an account, four more after you create one, against three computer opponents, with no card on file.
Most American Mah Jongg players learned the game at a real table, which is a good way to learn but a hard way to practice: it needs three other people free at the same time. Here's how to get practice in without waiting for a full group.
Start without an account
Go to friendsatmahjong.com and you can play your first game immediately — no account, no card, no download. That first game is one hand.
Sign up for four more free games
Creating an account is passwordless — you get a code by email, and entering it signs you in. The account unlocks four additional free games, for five total, and none of them expire.
Set the pace that works for you
Before each single-player game you can choose a call-time setting (Relaxed through No Rush) and an opponent pace (Brisk, Calm, or Slow), so you can adjust the call time and opponent pace for your practice session. These settings are remembered on your device.
Practicing with your own card
The single-player table includes Friends at Mahjong's own 51-hand card, or you can follow your own 2026 NMJL card (57 hands) if that's what you use with your regular group. Friends at Mahjong is an independent teaching and gaming resource and isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Mah Jongg League.
When you want more than five games
After your free games, a membership keeps the table open. Social and Premium plans add unlimited play, and Premium adds hosting a private table so you can invite the same friends you'd normally play with in person. Pricing and plan details are on the membership page.
